Why We Use Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) With Our Puppies

When families bring home a puppy from Bailey's Darlin' Doodles, they often notice that their puppy seems confident, adaptable, and eager to learn. While genetics play an important role, much of a puppy's development begins long before they ever leave for their new home.

One of the ways we help give our puppies the best possible start is through Early Neurological Stimulation, commonly known as ENS.

Although most puppy owners have never heard of ENS, it has become an important part of many responsible breeding programs because of the positive impact it can have during a puppy's earliest days of life.

What Is Early Neurological Stimulation?

Early Neurological Stimulation is a series of gentle exercises performed during a very specific stage of a puppy's development.

The program was originally developed from studies conducted by the U.S. military's canine program, which explored ways to improve the development of working dogs. Over time, responsible breeders began implementing similar techniques to help support puppies during their critical early developmental period.

ENS involves a few simple exercises that are performed once daily for a short period of time. These exercises are introduced when puppies are just a few days old and continue for a limited developmental window.

The exercises are safe, gentle, and designed specifically for newborn puppies.

When Does ENS Begin?

At Bailey's Darlin' Doodles, we begin ENS when puppies are approximately three days old and continue through the recommended developmental period.

This stage is important because puppies are undergoing rapid neurological growth. Their brains and nervous systems are developing quickly, making this a unique opportunity to introduce mild, controlled stimulation.

Each session lasts only a few moments per puppy and is carefully monitored to ensure the experience remains positive.

Potential Benefits of ENS

Research and breeder experience have suggested several potential benefits associated with Early Neurological Stimulation.

While no program can guarantee specific outcomes, many breeders and trainers believe ENS may help support:

• Greater adaptability to new situations

• Improved stress tolerance

• Increased confidence

• Enhanced problem-solving abilities

• Better recovery from challenges or surprises

• Stronger overall resilience

These are qualities that can be valuable whether a puppy grows up to be a beloved family pet, therapy dog, service prospect, or adventure companion.

Building Confidence From the Beginning

One of our goals is to help puppies develop into well-rounded companions that can confidently navigate the world around them.

As puppies grow, they will encounter countless new experiences. Meeting new people, visiting the veterinarian, riding in a vehicle, hearing household noises, and adjusting to a new home all require a certain level of confidence and adaptability.

ENS is just one piece of the foundation that helps prepare puppies for these experiences.

ENS Is Only the Beginning

While ENS is important, it is only one small part of our puppy-raising program.

As puppies continue to grow, they are exposed to age-appropriate socialization, new surfaces, sounds, environments, and experiences. We also introduce Early Scent Introduction (ESI), begin foundational potty training, and spend countless hours helping our puppies develop into confident companions.

Each stage builds upon the previous one, creating opportunities for positive growth and learning.

Why We Believe It Matters

The first few weeks of a puppy's life are incredibly important. During this time, every positive experience helps build the foundation for the dog they will eventually become.

We believe responsible breeding involves much more than producing healthy puppies. It means investing time, effort, and intentional care into their development from day one.

ENS is one of the many ways we strive to give our puppies the best possible start in life.

Our Commitment to Every Puppy

At Bailey's Darlin' Doodles, we are passionate about raising puppies that are not only healthy but also confident, well-socialized, and prepared for life with their new families.

From health-tested parents to ENS, ESI, temperament evaluations, and early training foundations, every step of our program is designed with the future success of our puppies in mind.

While no breeder can predict exactly who a puppy will become, we believe the effort invested during those first few weeks can make a meaningful difference.

Because every great family dog starts with a strong foundation.
